Almost all newly delivered trailers are standard equipped with a 13-pin plug, and most new cars are also standard equipped with a 13-pin plug socket. This 13-pin Hella plug is one of the most commonly used due to its easy installation and the ability to disassemble the plug at a later time. This plug is equipped with screw connections, making it easy to mount.
One of the advantages of a 13-pin plug compared to a 7-pin plug is that it fits much more securely in the plug socket. Because the 13-pin plug is twisted securely into the socket with a rotating motion, it cannot come loose during driving. This significantly reduces the chance of malfunctions on the road.
In addition to the benefits for the driver during reversing, the use of a 13-pin plug also allows for the use of a reverse light. This not only enhances safety for the driver while reversing but also makes it quickly apparent to anyone behind the trailer that the vehicle is reversing, reducing the risk of accidents.
For caravans, the use of a 13-pin plug also allows for the use of continuous power in addition to the fog light. This way, the caravan can receive power from the car while driving.
If in doubt, we always recommend opting for a 13-pin system. This ensures greater safety, fewer malfunctions, and with 13-pin becoming the new standard, 7-pin systems are becoming increasingly rare.

The 13-pin plug system according to ISO 11446 was developed in the late 1980s. Unlike the 7-pin system, the high number of poles allows for the transfer of all light and additional functions with just one connector. Due to its advantages, including waterproofing, stability, contact safety, and ease of use with a bayonet lock, the system is increasingly replacing older generations of connectors.
